Kongō Iwao I
Iwao Kongo(1932)Nōgaku: Japanese Nō Plays, Murray, London [EN]
- 11I have been much indebted to the works of Mr. T. Nogami, Mr. A. Nose, Mr. N. Ikenouchi, and of course the writings of Seami, and to other Japanese writers of the No, and to much helpful information from Mr. Iwao Kongo, the head of the Kongo School of No in Kyoto.
- 12I thank the following gentlemen who have assisted me in my study of No: Mr. S. Sugihira and Mr. K. Yokogawa, of Otani University; Mr. H. Inada ; my husband, D. T. Suzuki ; Mr. G. Makiyama, who first unlocked for me the door to No appreciation; and above all, Mr. Iwao Kongo, for the inspiration of his wonderful interpretations, without seeing which I could never have attempted to write of No.
- 27The. singing of Mr. Iwao Kongo is especially beautiful.
- 33Mr. Iwao Kongo has told mo that when acting Komachi he is Komachi, that he has completely identified himself; he is not acting, but has become Komachi herself.
- 3-4Iwao Kongo, head of the Kongo School, a series of demonstrations by him of the various conventions of Noh acting and dancing and full performance of the play, Hagoromo (A Robe of Feathers).
- 4The Society is grateful to Mr. Kongo and Mr. Umewaka for the wholehearted co-operation they extended in making these presentations possible and also for allowing us to take photographs of their highly treasured Noh costumes and masks for reproduction in this volume.
