“Traces of the masters”: 16 mm film from the Kōzan Bunko Collection
The Kōzan Bunko Collection contains around 50 rolls of 16 mm film recorded by EJIMA Ihei with the name “Fragments of noh drama, traces of the masters.” In 1987, these films were edited as video under the title “Traces of the Masters” with the addition of a soundtrack of singing (utai) and instrumental music (hayashi), and later converted to DVD.
This online archive consists of excerpts from individual plays, taken from the 16 mm recordings. The VHS version of “Traces of the Masters” also contains most of these recordings, but they are made public here in their original format, without alteration of speed or other kinds of editing.
The recordings are listed in the following categories:
(1) noh plays (in kana-order of play title),
(2) hakama-nō (noh plays performed in formal hakama costume, without masks), maibayashi (dance to chorus and instruments), shimai (noh dances),
(3) kyōgen plays,
(4) basic stage movements,
(5) miscellaneous.
An asterisk indicates that the recording is included in the VHS “Traces of the Masters.”
All names of performers are given in Japanese order.
