This seminar dealt with a variety of contemporary issues involving Nō theatre, such as experimental collaboration with other arts, Nō in English, and the creation of new Nō plays. The program of Day 1 centered on the perspective of Nō actors and other practitioners of the Nō theatre, with various reports on the situation “in the field,” so to speak. At the symposium of Day 2, reports from representatives of the fields of education and contemporary theatre were followed by a general discussion of the “Nohesque” elements common to these new endeavors. Day 3 explored possibilities for the inspirational influence on Nō on other genres, from the perspective of Western music. Publication of a report on the seminar is planned for the coming year.
